Pendleton Standoff Ends, Suspect in Custody

A 26-year-old Pendleton man is custody following a standoff with police that started last night just after 8 PM on the 100 block of SE Goodwin Avenue.

Pendleton Police officers responded after receiving a 911 call advising that the caller witnessed an American Indian male stick a handgun in the faces of two white men before entering an apartment.  Approximately six minutes later, Pendleton Police Officers had established a perimeter, and began evacuating neighboring residents.

Several attempts were made to communicate with the suspect, later identified as 26-year old Ean Pierce of Pendleton who refused to speak with officers and/or exit the residence.  Therefore, Pendleton tactical team members were summoned to the scene.  The standoff continued for approximately three hours while police detective(s) and family members used the Public Address (PA) system mounted in a patrol car to try and convince Pierce to surrender peacefully.  However, Pierce made no attempt to acknowledge and/or answer.

Due to the fact perimeter officers could see movement inside the apartment; the decision was made to tactically approach the residence to insert a cellular telephone.  Contingency plans were developed should the attempt to establish communication fail.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., Pendleton SWAT approached the residence with an armored vehicle.  As the team reached the house, Pierce emerged from the front door unarmed.  He was quickly ordered to the ground, and secured without incident.  Pierce was escorted to a nearby patrol car while tactical members entered the apartment in search of additional threats to public safety.

Pierce was transported to the Pendleton Police Department where he was interviewed.  An affidavit and accompanying search warrant was drafted and presented to a Umatilla County Circuit Court Judge requesting the authority to search the apartment for the handgun that was reportedly pointed at two citizens earlier in the evening.

Around 8:30 a.m., August 5, 2014, a search warrant was served on the apartment located at 104 SE Goodwin Av., Pendleton by Pendleton Police Department detectives.  Discovered/recovered was a loaded stolen hammerless .357 revolver, which matched the description of the gun used by Pierce, a quarter ounce of heroin, grams of methamphetamine, packaging material and other drug paraphernalia.  The investigation is ongoing based on the items discovered during the search.

Pierce is currently lodged in the Umatilla County Jail on the strength of a probation violation warrant.  Detectives in cooperation with the Umatilla County District Attorney’s Office are considering additional criminal charges, which may include, but are not limited to: Ex-Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Pointing a Firearm at Another x 2, Menacing, Frequenting a Place where Controlled Substances are Used and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Displaced residents were allowed to return to their respective homes after midnight.
