Yakima, WA – The Yakima chapter of The First Tee is pleased to announce that longtime program participant, Max Turnquist, was named a first place winner in the Wells Fargo Succeeding TogetherSM contest, a video essay contest that celebrates the importance The First Tee and the game of golf can have in a young person’s life. As a winner, Max will travel, with his mother, to Charlotte, N.C. to attend the Wells Fargo Championship Pro-Am.
Max’s winning video told the story of his 13 year old life, beginning with the discovery of a congenital heart defect when he was just a tiny baby. Following numerous surgeries, Max became a toddling golfer and has never looked back. His video highlights his personal favorite Core Value®; Perseverance. Max is beside himself with excitement for his four-day/three-night trip to begin. The Wells Fargo Championship is one of the largest, most prestigious sporting events in the Charlotte region. Because of consistent overall excellence, the Wells Fargo Championship was awarded unprecedented back-to-back “Best in Class” Awards in 2009 and 2010 by the PGA TOUR. The 2014 tournament will be held April 28-May 4. A combination of Quail Hollow Club and the spirit of the Charlotte area community are among the reasons the Wells Fargo Championship has, and should, continue to draw many of the world's top golfers to Charlotte. As a fist place winner, Max will be inside the ropes, seeing the tournament from a player’s viewpoint and visiting with many of his golf heroes.
The First Tee of Yakima is the local chapter of a national youth development program designed to build character, develop life-enhancing values, and help youth make healthy choices through the game of golf. Each of The First Tee’s chapters promotes the nine core values of Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy and Judgment, instilling youth around the world with personal qualities and skills crucial to succeeding in life.
