1 dead inside Richland apartment where deputies tried to evict tenant

RICHLAND, Wash. — One person was found dead inside a Richland apartment where deputies were trying to evict a tenant on Tuesday.

Around 11 a.m., a civil detective with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office went to the Riverpoint Apartments at 2550 Duportail St. and knocked on the door, said Comm. Steve Caughey.

The tenant didn’t answer, so the detective got inside the apartment with help from the apartment manager. Richland Police Department was called to assist.

When officers entered the apartment, they heard what sounded like a single gunshot. They immediately got out and called in Tri-City Regional SWAT.

They surrounded the home and had apartment complex residents either evacuate or shelter in place. Using a robot, they entered the home and found a male dead inside.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that the person inside died by suicide. His name has not been released yet.

This is a developing story.
