1 found dead in house fire near Toppenish
TOPPENISH, Wash. — Firefighters recovered a body from a house fire near Toppenish on Thursday night.
The identity of the deceased victim has not yet been released.
Yakima County Fire District 5 received reports of a structure fire at about 8:10 p.m. off State Route 97 roughly two miles south of Toppenish.
Crews arrived to find fire coming out of the roof and bedroom windows near the back of the home. The roof had already collapsed into the room.
A neighbor implied the owner may still be inside the building.
Firefighters entered the home but were unable to find anyone inside in the initial search due to the heavy flames and collapsed roof.
Once the fire was maintained, police were able to enter the home through back bedroom. After further inspection, a person was found dead inside the home.
Crews contacted the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Marshal, turning the investigation to them.
Twenty-six firefighters from four District 5 stations arrived on the scene. No firefighters or other civilians were injured.
Damage of the house added up to an estimated $65,000.
The fire is still under investigation as of Friday morning.
