Police: Employee found Kamiakin HS student’s gun because his backpack smelled like weed

KENNEWICK, Wash. – Police said a 15-year-old student was caught with a loaded gun at Kamiakin High School on Tuesday because his backpack smelled like marijuana.

According to the Kennewick Police Department, a teacher told security that the backpack was left in their classroom. A security guard noticed the backpack smelled like marijuana, opened the backpack and found drugs and a pistol inside.

The boy who is alleged to have brought the gun to school was located in a classroom. Police said he ran from officers in an attempt to flee before being taken into custody. He was emergency expelled from school.

The student was booked into the Benton Franklin Juvenile Detention Center for possession of a firearm on school property and drug violations.

“There was never any known or perceived threat to students or staff,” police said in a news release.
