2 injured after Umatilla County crash
UMATILLA COUNTY, Wash. — A driver and his passenger were badly injured while merging onto Highway 207 coming from I-84 eastbound on Monday.
Markus Smith, 20, or Boardman and his 13-year-old male passenger took the Highway 207 exit and stopped at a stop sign just before 10:30 a.m. They were in a silver Pontiac Grand Am.
Smith stopped a stop sign before turning onto the highway. He pulled in front of a commercial vehicle being driven by Kevin Helzer, 56, of Hermiston.
The Pontiac sideswiped the commercial vehicle, which spun into another commercial vehicle being driven by Glen Sharp, 53, of Umatilla.
Smith was taken to Good Shepherd Hospital in Hermiston for serious injuries.
His 13-year-old passenger suffered critical injuries and was transported to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland by Life Flight. He was later flown to a hospital in Spokane from there.
The commercial vehicle operators were not injured in the collision.
The crash is under investigation by troopers with Hermiston and Oregon State Police.
