2 Washington state educators killed in Mexico bus crash

SEATTLE (AP) – A husband and wife who were longtime educators in Washington state were among the 11 foreign tourists killed in a bus crash in southern Mexico.

Jody Fritz was an assistant principal at an elementary school in Belfair. North Mason School District Superintendent Dana Rosenbach says a family member notified the school that Fritz died while vacationing in Mexico. She says Fritz was an outstanding educator with a heart for the community.

Her husband Andy Fritz taught environmental science at Clover Park Technical College south of Tacoma for nearly two decades. A college official, Tawny Dotson, says he was committed to teaching and the environment and that the community is reeling from his loss.

A Mexican state prosecutor says a preliminary investigation shows that driver negligence and speed caused the bus crash that killed 11 foreign tourists and their guide. The driver, who was among 20 people injured in the accident, was in custody.
