3-year-old killed in Yakima County tractor accident, deputies say
MABTON, Wash. — The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a young girl’s death Friday on a Lower Valley farm.
Deputies say it appears the 3-year-old victim fell off of a tractor and was run over.
The sheriff’s office was called to a property in the 6400 block of Sunnyside-Mabton Highway for “a report of a 3-year-old female child being injured after being run over by a farm tractor,” according to Deputy Scot Swallow.
The call for help came in around 3:30 p.m. Friday. Lower Valley District 5 Fire department responded as well. Before firefighters and deputies got there, they say, someone else at the scene had driven the girl to a hospital in Sunnyside, where she died.
“Initial investigation revealed that the child was riding in the bucket of a front-end loader on the front of a tractor which was being driven by the child’s father. The child fell/came out of the bucket and was ran over by one of the wheels on the tractor,” said Deputy Swallow.
“This is a tragic incident and a reminder to all to be safe in what we are doing with and around our children.”
Investigators with the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit say they do not believe the girl’s father was intoxicated at the time, and they are not yet releasing the names of the people involved.
