4 dogs kill horse in vicious attack in Yakima County
COWICHE, Wash. — Four dogs will be put down after attacking two horses in Cowiche Wednesday, causing fatal injuries to one of them.
Bill Haney, 68, said his neighbors’ pit bulls got into his yard in the 400 block of Track Road and attacked the horses around 5 p.m., according to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office.
Extremely graphic photos on Facebook show a 23-year-old horse named Pineaway with deep lacerations on his neck and legs from being mauled. The second horse survived and is being treated by a veterinarian.
The dog owners, a 22-year-old woman and 20-year-old man, were cited for each dog. Each citation could warrant a $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail.
The owners said they are taking “full responsibility for the actions of their dogs” and plan to have them all euthanized by the weekend. They have also offered to pay for the surviving horse’s medical bills, said Sgt. Casey Schilperoort.
Schilperoort said the dogs have not been reported to the sheriff’s office in the past, and it is unclear what caused them to attack the horses.
