66-year-old is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Yakima

A Yakima Police officer is on paid administrative leave following an officer-involved shooting on Friday night.

At about 9:45 p.m., officers responded to a report of a reckless driver at the intersection of 40th Avenue and Summitview Avenue in Yakima. YPD officers and Yakima County Sheriff’s deputies were able to locate the suspect’s vehicle at the intersection of 66th Avenue and Century Street.

The suspect hit both of their patrol cars, police say. That’s when an officer from the police department fired shots at the suspect’s vehicle, hitting the person in the car.

According to a press release, an undetermined number of shots hit the person inside the suspect vehicle. Police say the 66-year-old suspect died at the scene.

Officers have not yet identified the suspect killed.

The incident is being investigated by the Yakima Valley Special Investigative Unit, which is made up by law enforcement professionals throughout Central Washington.
