Abandoned church in Wapato damaged by fire
A former church caught on fire in Wapato on Tuesday night.
Around 9:30 p.m., Wapato firefighters were sent to 102 East 5th Street, the former Assembly of God Church.
That’s where firefighters found flames damaging classrooms, a sanctuary and a stage.
Wapato Fire Chief Bob Clark also told KAPP-KVEW heavy smoke and fire caused significant damage to the second floor.
With assistance from Yakima, Toppenish and Sunnyside crews they knocked out the fire and no one was injured.
Chief Clark said it’s too soon to say the cause, but mentioned there is a history of homeless people entering the building.
