OLYMPIA, Wash – A bill pre-filed for the upcoming session of the Washington legislature would require schools to provide free tampons and pads by the 2021-2022 school year.

The bill, filed by a group of men and women in the state senate, requires that the feminine products in gender-neutral bathrooms and bathrooms designated for female students in public schools that serve any grades six through 12. The bill says the products are for student use only. It would also apply to charter schools.

It would also require school districts to bear the cost of supplying the products, going on to say that districts could seek grants or partner with non-profits or community groups.

A similar bill was introduced last session but did not advance through the House.

The legislature reconvenes on January 13th.
