SR 17 reopens near Mesa after semi spills over a dozen crushed cars onto the road

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Wash. — State Route 17 is back open in both directions Thursday afternoon after a semi-trailer crashed and spilled over a dozen crushed cars onto the road, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Troopers and deputies responded to the crash near milepost 9 just north of Mesa at about 8:50 a.m. They said speed was a factor.

The roadway was blocked for more than six hours as crews cleared the scene.

The driver of the semi, 60-year-old Bruce Whiteaker, was transported to Lourdes Medical Center in Pasco with minor injuries. He was cited for negligent driving. No other vehicles were involved.

The roadway reopened at about 3:20 p.m.
