Boy accidentally shoots friend in Yakima, sheriff says

Armed suspects rob store, take off in stolen car, light it on fire

A teenager in Yakima is recovering after being shot Monday.

Police were called out to the 6900 block of Ahtanum Road after hearing reports of someone being shot. It was initially reported as a drive-by shooting.

The 911 caller reported that a stranger drove up to his friend’s house and shot at the 14-year-old who was standing in the driveway.

When officers arrived, the 14-year-old victim was suffering from gunshot wounds. The bullet reportedly went through his left wrist and into his chest. He was taken to the hospital.

Since the incident was reported as a drive-by shooting the security at the hospital was enhanced for the protection of patients, staff, and visitors.

While detectives interviewed the victim, he admitted that his friend accidentally shot him.

Deputies went back to the home and confiscated the gun. They said criminal charges are may be filed.

Officers want to remind gun owners to properly secure firearms to prevent these types of incidents. They said the teen is “lucky to be alive considering the location of his injuries.”
