CBC warns of false rumor involving student with coronavirus
PASCO, Wash. — Columbia Basin College is warning the public about a false rumor involving a confirmed case of novel coronavirus in a student housing facility.
The college said the rumor appears to have started from a phishing campaign that sent out a fake CNN alert.
“Please note that we have no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus, persons under investigation for novel coronavirus or anyone being monitored for novel coronavirus at Columbia Basin College, or anywhere in Benton or Franklin Counties,” a statement from CBC says.
Citing news reports, CBC said “threat actors” are taking advantage of the coronavirus outbreak in new phishing email and text campaigns by using public fear to increase the likelihood that users will click on a link or open an attachment.
