Child wakes up family members as fire breaks out in Yakima home
A family of four was able to escape a house fire with the help of an alert child, according to the Yakima Fire Department.
The fire started early this morning in the 900 block of South 8th Street.
Just after 4 a.m. Yakima firefighters were dispatched to the home. They say two children had already escaped after one of them woke up and alerted everyone to the fire.
YFD Shift Commander Jennifer Norton said there were not working smoke alarms in the home.
“We were lucky that one of the children happened to wake up and alert the family,” said Norton. “Working smoke alarms save lives. Please check yours today.”
YFD went on to say that they found blue flames across the ceiling – an indication of a gas fire. Gas was shut off while the fire was extinguished.
It took firefighters about two hours to put out the fire.
Damages are estimated at about $75,000.
The family of four is receiving help from the Red Cross.
The cause is still under investigation but firefighters said it appeared to be accidental.
