Contamination event reported at Hanford tank farm area

Radiological contamination was discovered in an area Hanford tank farm workers were performing work at this morning.

A spokesman for Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) says after exiting the AX tank farm and removing their anti-contamination clothing, contamination was identified on several of the workers.

The workers were taken to decontamination stations, were successfully decontaminated and surveyed as “clean”.

As a precaution, further evaluations for possible internal contamination are underway.

Pit covers were reinstalled and no contamination was identified outside of the pit.

Access to the farm is currently restricted while a re-entry plan is developed.

A critique will be conducted to determine the source of the contamination and understand what took place.
