Coroner releases name of Wapato man found shot to death
WAPATO, Wash. – The Yakima County Coroner’s Office has identified a Wapato man found dead on May 31.
Coroner Jim Curtice said 24-year-old Oscar Rangel was shot and killed before his body was discovered near Highway 97 and West Wapato Road in the evening. His death has been ruled as a homicide.
It’s unclear how long Rangel had been dead before he was found, but Curtice said his body had been “fairly decomposed” at that time.
The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting the investigation.
Since Rangel was thought case initially thought to be of Native American decent, the case was going to be investigated by the FBI or Yakima Nation tribal police. The case was given to the sheriff’s office on Friday.
Sheriff’s office spokesman Casey Schilperoort said no suspects have been identified so far.
