If you haven’t done so already, make sure to check your smoke alarm batteries in your home while changing your clocks forward.

According to the Pasco Fire Department, from 2012-2016, almost 40 percent of fire deaths in the U.S. resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms.

Only three out of four homes reported they changed the batteries in their smoke alarms in the last six months, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Housing Survey for 2011. Batteries need to be replaced every year and tested every month.

The entire detector should be replaced every 10 years.
