‘Dead’ man who was positively identified shows up alive a year later

A Japanese man turned up a year after his presumed death, prompting his wife’s admission that she identified the wrong body.

The Associated Press reports Tokyo police acknowledged their mistake Wednesday, saying the body they found in 2017 belonged to another man who went missing at the same time. Upon the discovery of the man, the wife and two other relatives positively identified the body as their missing family member. The body was cremated.

The man who had presumably died returned home in May. Police declined to say where he had spent the last year.

The body that was recovered was returned to the correct family.

Police said they regret the mistake and will take preventive measures.
