Deadly officer-involved shooting investigation underway in Kennewick

KENNEWICK, Wash. — One man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Kennewick.

Authorities say Kennewick officers were doing extra patrols in the area of Fruitland Street and Columbia Drive around 11:45 p.m. Sunday.

The officers approached two men. While they were contacting them, one man attempted to run off, according to Lt. Aaron Clem with Kennewick Police.

Officers then attempted to detain the man who ran off when he allegedly showed a gun. That’s when the officer shot him multiple times.

The officers then provided medical aid to the injured man but he died at the scene.

Authorities have not yet identified the officers or suspects. Police say the second suspect was uninjured and brought to the police station as a witness.

The Special Investigations Unit, an outside police agency, will investigate the deadly shooting.

Per protocol, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.

Benton County deputies are assisting at the scene.

As of 2 a.m. Monday, Fruitland Street is blocked off between Columbia Drive and where Fruitland turns into Columbia Park Trail.
