Delaware license plate sells for $410,000
Delawareans are serious about low vehicle license plate numbers.
That’s how it appears at least after a bidder spent $410,000 on tag No. 20 at an auction in Rehoboth Beach on Sunday.
“It’s a Delaware thing, that’s for sure,” Delaware Tag Traders owner John Wakefield told the Delaware News Journal. “That’s the only thing you can say to it.”
The Journal reported low-digit tags are typically for sale once every month or six weeks at auction, but not tag numbers as low as 20.
“When you have one like 20 it generates quite a stir and a buzz,” Wakefield said.
He said the $410,000 selling price was higher than expected, but not by much. It’s one of the highest-priced tags sold in recent years, he said, surpassing the $325,000 spent on tag 14 in 2004.
