Driver fatally shoots himself during traffic stop on I-82 east
GRANGER, Wash. — A man fatally shot himself during a traffic stop on I-82 east near Granger Sunday afternoon.
Around 2:30 p.m. a Washington State Patrol trooper pulled over the man for a seat belt infraction.
The suspect then got out of his vehicle with a gun in his hand. After he refused orders to drop the weapon from the trooper, he walked in front of his car and shot himself.
WSP Sergeant Trevor Herrud said they are just trying to put the pieces together.
“He didn’t say a word, he just finished it,” Herrud said. “The trooper who pulled him over called for aid. Emergency Medical Services showed up but unfortunately there was no chance to save the man’s life.”
The trooper was unharmed and there were no passengers with the driver. Officials did not release the car model, but said the vehicle had an Idaho license plate.
Washington State Patrol, State Patrol detectives and the Yakima County Sheriff’s office are investigating the incident.
