Driver in serious condition after I-82 crash south of Kennewick

The driver who was injured has been identified as 57-year-old Karl Givens of Lyle, Washington. He was cited for negligent driving, says the Washington State Patrol.

His passenger, a 29-year-old Kennewick man, was not injured.

KENNEWICK, Wash. — One person is in serious condition after being hit by a semi-truck in an SUV on Interstate 82 at the State Route 395 interchange south of Kennewick.

The driver was merging onto I-82 from S.R. 395 southbound and pulled over, then appeared to start making a U-turn as if trying to go the wrong way on the freeway, according to witnesses.

The semi was eastbound on I-82 when it crashed into the SUV, crushing the driver’s side. The driver was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, but was conscious and alert at the time, said Trooper Chris Thorson.

No one else was injured.

Authorities are investigating whether the driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Drivers traveling from the Tri-Cities toward Oregon should use extra caution as there is dense fog on the roadway, Trooper Thorson said.
