Driver, passenger abandon vehicle after it catches fire in Kennewick

Firefighters responded to a blazing car fire on Monday morning at the Edison Village Green Apartments in Kennewick.

Authorities received reports of flames coming from the engine of a white Dodge Stratus in the parking lot around 7:44 a.m. Firefighters showed up in a ladder truck four minutes later.

One witness told KAPP-KVEW a female driver and male passenger were driving south on Edison Street when smoke started rising from the engine. He said flames could be seen from underneath the car.

The two pulled over, in the parking lot, exited the vehicle safely and fled from the scene before crews arrived, police said.

Firefighters extinguished the flames engulfing the car shortly after arriving on scene. The fire started in the engine area of the vehicle, according to Kennewick Fire Inspector Brian Ellis.

The reason for the driver and passenger abandoning the vehicle remains unknown.
