A Kennewick apartment building caught fire early Friday morning, prompting a large response.

Kennewick – An apartment building in a crowded complex caught fire just before 4:00 Friday morning.

Police and firefighters rushed to the Cambridge Station Apartments, just off W. 4th Avenue in Kennewick as neighbors huddled outside in the pre-dawn.

Rain had moved through Kennewick overnight, but apparently it was not enough.  One man said he woke up to a family member pounding on his door.  He described seeing a large tree next to the apartment building go up in flames as people raced to get out.

Dispatchers first started sending crews to the scene around 3:45 Friday morning.  Within 15 minutes, there was smoke still spilling into the parking lot, but no sign of flames coming from the building.

Investigators are working to determine how the fire started.
