Falling icicle punctures 10-year-old girl’s eye, doctor says it’s the second injury in a week
Doctor says it's the second injury in a week
SPOKANE, Wash. — A 10-year-old girl was staring at an icicle when it fell and punctured her eye, according to a Spokane ophthalmologist.
“She went to look in the mirror and she saw that her pupil was irregular,” said Dr. Caroline Shea.
The injury threatened the child’s vision. Dr. Shea said there was a chance the eye would have to be removed to prevent damage to the other eye.
The doctor successfully operated on the young girl at Sacred Heart Hospital earlier this week. The girl is now recovering and has 20/30 vision in the damaged eye, which Dr. Shea said is a great response just one day after surgery.
Surprisingly, Dr. Shea said it’s not the only icicle-related injury in the last week. Another child was knocking icicles off a building when one pierced the child’s eyelid and came close to damaging an eye. Dr. Shea said the child was treated at the hospital and is expected to be okay.
