Father dies trying to rescue son off Oregon coast

Authorities have released the name of a Colorado man who drowned off the Oregon Coast while attempting to rescue his 17-year-old son, who remains missing in the ocean.

Oregon State Police said Thursday that 50-year-old Robert Joseph Allen, from Fort Collins, Colorado, drowned Wednesday while trying to get to his son, Samuel Vicente Allen.

The younger Allen had been boogie boarding at Rockaway Beach and was knocked off his board by a wave.

His father went into the water when relatives couldn’t see the boy from the shore.

Another family member called 911 around 2:20 p.m. after losing sight of the father.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter found the father dead about 45 minutes later.
