Firefighters battle massive blaze at downtown Pendleton thrift store
PENDLETON, Ore. — UPDATE (10:00 a.m. Monday) – Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the blaze that destroyed the thrift store.
Assistant Fire Chief Shawn Penninger says the fire may have started in a central area of the store, and they have reached out to the Oregon State Fire Marshall to help with the investigation.
Penninger says the owner of the store told them they had $200,000 worth in inventory inside the store, and the building was a total loss.
UPDATE (9:00 p.m.) – More details are being released about the fire at the Pendleton thrift store.
Firefighters arrived to We Sell Stuff 2nd Hand Store and found smoke coming from multiple areas of the building. Before spraying water inside, they saw a person stick their head out a window from a loft above the store.
Black smoke quickly started to fill the room where the person was. Crews rushed to get the person out and successfully did so.
It took several hours to get the fire under control due to how quickly it spread, the building’s instability and void spaces, officials said. The cause is not known at this time.
Firefighters are responding to a large blaze in the downtown Pendleton area.
A video shared by a KAPP-KVEW viewer shows the fire shooting in the air. According to the Pendleton Police Department, “We Sell Stuff 2nd Hand Store” is the building on fire near Dorion Avenue and SW First St.
Police say multiple roads are closed including:
Main Street west on Dorion Avenue
SW First St. and SW Frazer Ave.
SW First St. and SW Court Ave.
SW Dorion Ave for all traffic going west at Second St.
Nearby buildings have been evacuated. Police tell KAPP-KVEW they’re asking pedestrians to also avoid the area due to the smoke.
