Fireworks cause brush fire, destroying Hermiston duplex
HERMISTON, Ore. — A brush fire caused by fireworks in Hermiston destroyed a duplex on Monday afternoon.
It started around 1 p.m. in tall grass near the intersection of 13th Street and Ridgeway Avenue. Windy conditions caused the fire to spread from a burning shed next door to the duplex at 275 NW 13th. Both buildings were a total loss.
Between 40 and 50 firefighters from Umatilla County Fire District #1, Umatilla Fire, Moro County EMS, Boardman Fire and Pendleton Fire arrived on scene.
Thirty-five residents were forced to evacuate from the area. No injuries were reported.
A total of five homes and 12 apartments were kept safe from the flames, according to Umatilla County Fire District #1.
Authorities do not know who is responsible for starting the fire.
