Flash Flood Warning issued for south central Walla Walla Co., new evacuations in place

The National Weather Service in Pendleton Oregon has issued a Flash Flood Warning for south central Walla Walla County until 10:45 a.m. Friday.

At 2:43 AM, emergency management reported that water will be released from Mill Creek into areas west of Walla Walla producing flash flooding.

Flooding of roads, fields as well as potentially homes and businesses is possible.

Some locations that will experience flooding include College Place and Garrett.

Officials warn that you “turn around, don’t drown” when encountering flooded roads.

Matthew Wyatt, the Head Pastor at the Waitsburg Christian Church, has opened the church to those looking to get inside. They have food and coffee and are located at 604 Main Street in Waitsburg.

The Red Cross has established a shelter at the Walla Walla Fairgrounds. They are accepting livestock.

EVACUATIONS

A level 3 mandatory evacuation is in place on Mill Creek Road, starting at 6549 Mill Creek Road to the Oregon Border.

According to the Walla Walla Sheriff’s Office:

UPDATE 2/07/2020 06:40 AM – Millrace Road between Walla Walla and Columbia County is also shut down. It is unknown at this time when passage will be open between Waitsburg and Dayton.

UPDATE 2/07/2020 05:40 AM – Washington State DOT has shut down SR 12 between Waitsburg and Dayton. At this time no detour route has been given.

UPDATE 2/07/2020 05:15 AM – Evacuations are not mandatory for all residents east of 6549 Mill Creek Road

UPDATE 2/07/2020 04:40 AM – Please be aware law enforcement, search and rescue and firefighters are out knocking on doors. Please do not be alarmed if a stranger shows up. We and passing along information, checking who needs assistance and taking head counts in the effected areas around the evacuation zone.

UPDATE 02/07/2020 02:30 AM –

Mandatory evacuations are beginning in the Hummingbird Place / Kooskooskie areas. Any residents in the area are urged to evacuate. If you are in need of assistance please contact dispatch at the number below.

UPDATE 02/06/2020, Midnight – Current Road Closures:

– Last Chance Road closed between Mission Road and Stovall Road
– Seven Mile Road closed from Mill Creek Road to the dead end
– Scenic Loop Road closed entirely
– Preston Avenue (Highway 12) closed in Waitsburg, between Main Street and Garden Street

Please avoid the areas of high water as erosion is possible and there is danger of being swept away. Please do not drive around barricades or through water over roadways as that is also highly dangerous and illegal.
