Human remains found in Milton-Freewater fire
MILTON-FREEWATER, Ore. — A body was found after crews extinguished a fire under the Eastside Bridge along the east bank of the Walla Walla River in Milton-Freewater early Monday morning.
Around 1:35 a.m. Milton-Freewater police and fire responded to the area for a report of a fire. At about 2 a.m. the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office responded to the fire due to it being in the jurisdiction of the sheriff’s office.
After extinguishing the fire, remains were found between two bridge abutments.
Initially due to the severity of the burning of the remains, the sex and race could not be determine, according to the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office. Friends and family later confirmed the remains were those of Marcos Gutierrez, 29, of Milton-Freewater.
Friends say he went out with friends Saturday and never returned home. he was filed as a missing person. His family was able to identify him by a visible tattoo, according to a close friend.
Paulina Avila, a close friend, said that Gutierrez was always someone you could count on. According to her, he likes doing pranks, making people laugh and overall he had a great personality and a good heart.
