Kennewick mother receives first surgery for new smile

Rachael Doras sat anxiously in an operator chair at the Columbia Basin Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons building, both excited and nervous to received a life-changing surgery for a brand new smile.

In November, Doras was announced as this year’s winner of the “Smile Again” program.

The program is for people who are in serious need of teeth reconstruction. The winner receives oral surgery and dental implants valued at about $50,000, free of cost.

Immediately after Doras was announced as the winner, the doctors all got to work. Doras’s case was unique. She had no top teeth at all and only six on the bottom. She had dentures, but they fit her uncomfortably and would sometimes fall out.

“I’m about $9,000 in debt because of the issues with my teeth,” Doras said. “I’m ready to smile again and feel confident.”

On Friday, Doras received brand new top and bottom teeth she can wear comfortably without hiding her smile.

“To do something like this for someone who’s so deserving, always putting others first, is amazing,” Dr. Ryan Toponce said. “We’re so glad we could help her get her confidence back.”

Doctors say Doras will have follow-up appointments for the next six months before she is fully healed. If you or anyone you know is interested in learning more about the Columbia Basin Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons’s Smile Again program, you can visit their website here.
