You often hear the phrase “live everyday like it’s your last.”

Sandra “San” Lacy is doing just that.

July 24th is her 81st birthday and she is celebrating by taking a leap of faith.

While many people celebrate their birthday by cutting a cake and blowing out candles, Lacy is doing something a little more memorable. She’s skydiving!

I’m not even worried about it. I don’t know why but I have no qualms about it whatsoever. I don’t have butterflies and the funny thing is I’m afraid of heights,” Lacy shared.

She first thought of the idea years ago but what really solidified it was when she saw someone do it on her favorite reality show. And thanks to a new program at Solstice Senior Living her birthday wish is coming true.

“Livin’ the Dream is the name of the program and it encourages us to do things that we wanted to do… take chances, live, live! Not just sit like a lump of flesh somewhere,” she added.

Although it might seem like a bit of a jump for those with more mileage, Sandra says she just wants to get out of her comfort zone.

“It’s just something exciting to do, instead of just the same old grind. It’s something fun, bold, daring. I like it.”

Lacy hasn’t gotten the best reactions from family members, “my daughter said, ‘why jump out of a perfectly good plane?’ and my son; ‘what are you going to do if you break your hip?’ Well, I’ll have to deal with a broken hip, I guess.”

But she stayed determined and eventually got their blessing.

Lacy left for Eagle Creek, Oregon Tuesday morning and a bus load of friends followed her along. They made shirts to show support and are even having dinner with her afterwards to celebrate another year with their close friend.

“It’s going to be a wonderful, wonderful day,” said Lacy.

And to put a cherry on top of the perfect birthday cake, Lacy’s son and daughter-in-law agreed to take the plunge with her.

“You have to live life to the fullest. Don’t be afraid to experiment and be social,” she added. “Go for it! Go for it! If it’s something you want to do, go for it. Especially, if you’re alone and have nothing to hold you back.”

While many are in awe, Lacy said it’s just another birthday for her.

“I couldn’t believe that there has been this much attention paid to it. It was very unexpected, just like this interview,” Lacy humbly admits. “Bush did it at 92. I still have 11 years to go.”

She has never done much for her birthday but this year has her think of the next. Lacy is already brainstorming ways to celebrate birthday number 82.

“In Vegas, there is a zip line over Fremont Street and you ride it like Superman instead of sitting down.”
