Latino Heritage mural goes up in Kennewick
KENNEWICK, Wash. — The public is invited to the unveiling of a two piece mural that depicts the Latino community.
The mural is going up at the Columbia Gardens Urban Wine & Artisan Village in east Kennewick.
Andrew Reid is the artist and said his piece is more than just a painting. He said it is a story about how the Latino community impacts the Columbian Basin.
“The main thing is to make sure we make people feel proud and take ownership so they can come down and bring their families and say ‘oh yeah, that was my parents’ or ‘I grew up doing this’,” said Reid.
The project has been in the works for more than two years. Reid said he took his time because he wanted to make sure he got the message right.
“I flew out and stayed about a week here,” said Reid. “I relied a lot on the people and the staff of the Port of Kennewick to get groups of locals to come over and tell me their story. I interviewed a lot of people, probably over 100.”
You can see the mural at its unveiling on May 23 at the Columbia Gardens Urban Wine & Artisan Village. They will have live music and speeches. It all starts at 2 p.m.
