Local non-profit celebrates third anniversary by helping families with critical home repair needs
KENNEWICK,Wash. — Rebuilding Mid-Columbia celebrated its third anniversary with Lord of Life Church Saturday morning by volunteering and addressing the critical home repair needs of three local low-income families.
Rebuilding Mid-Columbia’s Executive Director, Crystal Carter, said the non-profit builds wheelchair ramps for the disabled, addresses safety concerns for the elderly and ensures that the children of single-parents have a safe and healthy home to grow in.
They offer their services to low-income homeowners in the Tri-Cities at no cost. Since its start, the non-profit has served 91 local families.
Shona Sailor is one of the homeowners who received help from the group Saturday. Volunteers helped with yard work, and cleaning up around her home. They also repaired her wheelchair ramp. Recently, volunteers helped remodel her bathroom to make it wheelchair accessible.
Sailor said while she does live with her son and has caregivers, she appreciates the additional help from volunteers.
Sailor said the volunteers have been a part of her life for seven years now.
“They come to do the work, but they’re so friendly and caring that they end up being friends, and that’s the best thing about it I think,” said Sailor. “I feel super blessed.”
Carol Moser, a volunteer with Lord of Life Church, said she’s volunteered to help Sailor before.
“I do think that it creates a connection with the community when you get to know the community you’re working with and for,” said Moser. “And a little bit more meaningful, especially when you know the situations that people are living with. It makes you feel good that you can use your ability that God has given us to help people out in the community.”
On Oct. 12, Rebuilding Mid-Columbia will serve its hundredth family during its community revitalization project, where they’ll be installing ramps and minor home repairs for over ten local families. Carter said they are still looking for sponsors for the event.
