Local winery prepares for Kentucky Derby party
PROSSER, Wash. — Many across the country are placing their bets for the Kentucky Derby this weekend.
If you don’t feel like going all the way to Kentucky, a local winery with special connections to the event is hosting a viewing party.
Prosser may be a small town, but one winery in particular is gaining national attention.
Once again, 14 Hands Winery is the official wine partner of the highly anticipated Kentucky Derby and rightfully so.
“14 Hands is named after the wild horses that once roamed eastern Washington where are grapes are grown now. So the correlation between the two is just awesome,” said Stephanie Mendoza, guest services manager at 14 Hands Winery.
On Saturday, many across the country will be sipping a special local wine as they watch the races.
“We have a 2014 limited release Kentucky Derby red blend that we sell here in the tasting room that will be available for tasting and for purchase,” said Mendoza.
Many are expected to show up in their finest Kentucky Derby attire.
“It just keeps growing every year and we are looking forward to having a lot of guests this year again,” said Mendoza. “There is a sense of pride that 14 Hands was chosen to be the official wine sponsor of the Kentucky Derby, as a winery from Prosser, it’s wonderful to be featured on a national level,” she said.
The Kentucky Derby event at 14 Hands Winery in Prosser is this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The event features tasting, wine by the glass and snacks.
There will also be a contest for the best hat.
