WEST RICHLAND, Wash. — Police say an alleged child rapist wanted in West Richland was recently captured in Texas.

Jose Angel Mejia, 24, is accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy about a year and a half ago, said West Richland Police Capt. Tom Grego.

Authorities started investigating Mejia in March 2019, when the boy told his parents about the alleged abuse. They developed enough evidence to issue a warrant for his arrest. Police said Mejia and the boy are related.

A few weeks ago, West Richland police learned of his arrest in Texas and had him extradited to the Benton County Jail.

Mejia was booked Monday on charges of first-degree rape of a child and first-degree child molestation. He will be facing those charges in Benton County Superior Court.

His bail has been set at $200,000.
