Manchester attack hits close to home reminding local venues of importance of security

The attack in Manchester may have been thousands of miles away, but the concern hits close to home.

The Toyota Center in Kennewick is a venue known for big events like concerts, graduations and sporting events.

The executive director of the Three Rivers Campus said staff are always thinking security, whether that means annual and weekly training or developing evacuation plans.

“We do mock evacuations with staff in the building,” said Corey Pearson. “Exactly what happened in Manchester, one of the things we train for is to be careful that you’re not evacuating waiting people into harms way,” he said. “It’s all stuff that we talk about ahead of time and hope that we never have to implement.”

Pearson said at each concert security is at the door, wanding people as they come in, doing visual searches inside the building and outside of the building maintaining security.

Police are also at each concert and for every 250 people inside there is one trained crowd manager.

Pearson said if you see something, say something because they can’t do it all alone.
