MESA, Wash. — The former Clerk and Treasurer of the City of Mesa has been brought into custody for allegedly stealing funds from the city for herself and others, then using her position of power to cover it up.

According to an announcement made by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Danni Lee Speelman was arrested on Sept. 12, 2022 at the culmination of a monthslong investigation. Authorities say she was relieved of her position earlier in the year.

Franklin County officials say a representative of the City of Mesa contacted the Sheriff’s Office in mid-July regarding what they believed to be a fraudulent transaction during Speelman’s time in the role. When looking into her history in the position, Franklin County investigators substantiated the claim and found several more fraudulent transactions.

They allegedly learned that Speelman administered several checks for herself and others, then used her position of power to conceal the activity. If these allegations are proven true, she would have effectively abused her role as the leader of the city’s accounting system to steal from Mesa.

Speelman is now being held on an investigative hold for the following pending charges: Theft, Attempted Theft, Forgery and Misappropriation of Accounts by a Public Officer. She is lodged at the Franklin County Corrections Center without bail while the Prosecutor’s Office reviews the charges and makes a final decision about how to proceed.
