ELLENSBURG, Wash. — WA-821 through the Yakima Canyon was blocked over a four-hour period on Thursday morning when a motorcyclist collided with a pick-up truck in an accident that turned fatal.

According to a press memo issued by the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the accident was reported around 9:30 a.m. on May 26, 2022.

Leading up to the accident, a 35-year-old Yakima man rode his motorcycle on WA-821  approaching milepost six in the only northbound lane. At the same time, two men in their 70s from Ellensburg were driving in the only southbound lane approaching the same milepost.

It’s unclear what caused this to occur, but WSP Troopers confirmed that the motorcyclist crashed into the pickup truck, totaling both vehicles as they settled in the right shoulder of the southbound lane.

Emergency first responders rushed to the scene and the motorcyclist was brought to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. WSP officials confirmed that the victim later died at the hospital. As family members have been notified, they released his identity: Joseph C. Scheuffele of Yakima.

Neither of the riders inside the pick-up truck was seriously injured as a result of this accident. They each wore their seatbelts, according to the WSP investigation.

Over the course of four hours, WA-821 was at least partially blocked which lead to traffic delays through the Yakima Canyon.
