Fireworks explosion kills 1 near Toppenish, coroner says

TOPPENISH, Wash. - A Fourth of July fireworks accident in the Toppenish area left one man dead Thursday evening, according to Yakima County Coroner Jim Curtice. 

The man was fatally injured when a mortar exploded on him, Curtice said. He was brought to Astria Toppenish Hospital where he died roughly around 7 p.m.

The details surrounding the incident have not been revealed. 

The coroner's office confirmed that the man was in his late 40s to early 50s. His name will not be released until family is notified. 

The incident appears to have happened on the Yakama Indian Reservation under Yakama Tribal Police jurisdiction, the coroner and the Yakima County Sheriff's Office said. 

Tribal Police said they did not respond to the incident.
