Grandview man killed in early Sunday morning crash

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. - A Grandview man was killed by crashing into a tree, ejecting himself from a vehicle early Sunday morning. 

Heriberto "EJ" Maya Jr., 24, was driving down Waneta Road hear Sunnyside just after midnight when he left the roadway traveling over 50 miles per hour. He tried to correct his mistake and slid sideways, striking the tree on the passenger side, according to Washington State Patrol.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

He is survived by his daughter, parents, two sisters, two brothers and many cousins and friends. 

Investigators said there are indications that Maya was intoxicated at the time of the collision. They are still waiting for blood results.

The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation.
