WSP: Grandview woman swerves to avoid skunk, sends 1 to hospital

PROSSER, Wash. - A Grandview woman crashed on I-82 near Prosser while trying to avoid a skunk, sending one person to the hospital.

Mayra Mejia, 19, was going west around 5:20 p.m. when she swerved into Maria Sandoval, 28, of Sunnyside about three miles east of Prosser.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports the crash caused Sandoval’s vehicle to cross the median and come to a stop in an eastbound lane.

She was transported to a local hospital. Her condition is unknown at this time.

Sandoval’s passengers, a 2-year-old boy and two girls ages 9 and 11, were not injured. Mejia’s passenger Lorenzo Sanchez, 21, was also not injured. All persons involved were properly restrained, troopers said.

Mejia was cited for an unsafe lane change due to inattention.
