Jacobs and Rhodes installs free HVAC unit for nominated Kennewick family

FEEL THE LOVE

KENNEWICK, Wash. -

A Kennewick family won't have to rely on space heaters to stay warm overnight this winter, thanks to a local heating and air company.

Jacobs and Rhodes partnered with Lennox to participate in a program called "Feel the Love," where the community is invited to nominate someone they think is deserving of a free heating and air conditioning unit, plus installation.

25 to 30 candidates have been nominated since August and sent to Lennox, which narrowed the list down to five. Jacobs and Rhodes then interviewed the final five, settling on one lucky winner.

"It was really hard to select that one person because we felt like we wanted to help them all," said Kevin Gunn, comfort specialist with Jacobs and Rhodes.

The company chose Angie Jefferson - a single mom of three who recently moved back into her childhood home to help care for her mother.

"I don't usually win very many things so I just really didn't think it would be us," said Jefferson. "When I got the call I had to pull over and I started crying; it was awesome."

The Jefferson's HVAC unit broke mid-summer. Jefferson said they had it looked at and were going to be able to get the AC part fixed, but not the heating component.

Now, they'll be able to have central heating during the winter months.

"It's already been cold so I'm really glad we have heat tonight," she said.

The equipment and labor combined is worth about $10,000 in total. This is the first year Jacobs and Rhodes has participated in this program, but probably not the last.

"It was probably for me, the roughest two days of the job when we were asking people about their needs and their story, because they were all compelling but we had to only select one," said Gunn. "Hopefully next year we can maybe get Lennox to select two people, or maybe we can help a couple."
