Kennewick woman gets 30 days in jail for supporting husband's relationship with 13-year-old

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- A former paraeducator at Chinook Middle School in Kennewick was sentenced to 30 days in jail after police say she used her position to support her husband's relationship with a 13-year-old student.

Kimberlee Farber was originally charged with felony communication with a minor for immoral purposes. She pleaded guilty Thursday to the gross misdemeanor version of the same crime as part of a deal between the defense and the prosecution.

According to court documents, Kimberlee provided a phone to the girl, a student at the school where she worked, so that the girl could exchange text messages with her husband, Roy David Farber. She also delivered a letter from her husband to the child while at school.

Roy pleaded guilty to charges of sexual exploitation of a minor, child molestation and communication with a minor for immoral purposes. He received the maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Prosecutor Anita Petra said that the 13-year-old victim's family supported Kimberlee's plea agreement.

Petra told KAPP-KVEW the victim's family didn't want the girl to go through a trial nor did they want Kimberlee to go to jail. She said the family also considered Kimberlee as family. She said the family simply wanted closure with this case.

A mental health therapist determined that Kimberlee had mental health issues, and that combined with her relationship with an abusive husband may have contributed to her wrongful behavior, Petra said.

The family asked for Kimberlee to be ordered treatment and for her record to prevent her from working with children again. Both requests were granted as part of the sentencing, Petra said.

Kimberlee must register as a sex offender for the next 10 years.

Petra said she would have faced one to three months in jail had she been convicted of felony communication with a minor for immoral purposes.
