Level 3 sex offender accused of raping 12-year-old pleads not guilty to separate crime

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Skylar Nelson, a level 3 sex offender who allegedly raped a preteen girl in Kennewick last August, appeared in court Thursday to face a separate charge.

Nelson was arrested on suspicion of second-degree rape of a child on Tuesday, Sept. 24 after police say he carried a 12-year-old girl into a bathroom, pulled her hair and forced her to perform oral sex on him at an apartment on Clearwater Avenue near Albertsons, according to police.

Court records show Nelson was also booked into jail for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender. He pleaded not guilty to the crime during his court appearance. A trial was scheduled for Nov. 18.

Nelson was convicted of second-degree rape as a juvenile in 2014. His level 3 sex offender status means he poses a high risk to the community.

The defendant is still on a 72-hour investigative hold for the alleged sexual assault. Prosecutors have until Friday to charge him with the crime.

Nelson is being held at the Benton County Jail on $280,000 bail.
