Southridge students come together to celebrate the life of Ben Tucker
Seventeen-year-old Ben Tucker was the second Southridge high school student to die in just the last week. He was found early Saturday morning at Lampson stadium after authorities say he comitted suicide.
The Southridge community and even other Kennewick high school students and staff members showed up to show their support and say their goodbyes. Ben Tucker was a trumpet player in the school band and also ran sprints and threw shot put on the track and field team.
The Southridge school band played outside Holy Spirit Parish, with a single music stand left empty for Tucker.
Bradley Winkel, one of Tucker's band mate's, said, "It's just his spot that's where he would've stood and it isn't fair that he can't, he's not gonna be filling that spot anymore."
Another band classmate, Carrington Watson, said, "You can always hear Ben and I couldn't hear him and it just didn't feel the same."
She hopes Tucker is remembered for his funny band jokes and the way he could always lift his friends up when they were down.
"He was so motivated to do anything. It was just contagious, all the positivity was contagious and I just can't believe he's gone," Watson said.
Southridge High School students are mourning two losses one one week.
"A few days ago the same thing with John ... and it's just it's saddening, it gives you like a hollow, melancholy feel right in the pit of your stomach," said student, Jonny Puckett.
Members of the girls JV basketball team, which Tucker's sister Sarah is a part of, went around writing "Tucker Family" on guest's wrists.
"We had a basketball game when we found out so we were all really upset and so we were in the championship game and we wrote it on our wrists to show support for Sarah because we wanted to win for her," said player Peyton Santos.
Friends and family took colored markers and covered the casket with personal goodbyes and pictures lined the hallway of a life taken too soon.
The school and the Tucker family are also planning a tribute walk/run at Horse Heaven Hills park at 8 a.m. this Friday, June 24.
