Wenatchee Planned Parenthood now offering medication abortion

WENATCHEE, Wash. - A Planned Parenthood health center in Wenatchee has begun offering the option of medication abortion to women looking to stop early-stage pregnancies.

Previously, the clinic had to refer women seeking abortion to offices in Yakima or elsewhere.

Now, those women will have the option commonly refered to as “the abortion pill.” The treatment, which is targeted for pregnancies up to 10 weeks, uses two medications. The first, mifepristone, is used to block progesterone and stop the development of a fertilized egg. The second, misoprostol, triggers miscarriage-like symptoms.

The medication accounts for about 25 percent of abortions performed in the United States.
