Yakima City Council working to make school routes safer

YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima City Council is working to make the streets safer for kids walking to school with the Safe Routes to School program. 

Council members have been looking at safety issue on routes that children take to get to school, including lighting, gang activity, traffic issues and other problems. 

In addition to identifying potential hazard, the council has also been brainstorming ways to fix those issues.

The council is scheduled to talk about next steps for the program at its regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Yakima City Hall, 129 N 2nd St.
